âAre you sure there are no bats up there?â Maya asked, poised midway on the ladder that led to the loft in Gradyâs barn. After hearing Katieâs story earlier in the evening, she was freaked out by the possibility of being attacked.
âItâs all clear,â Jace said from the loft.
âAre you sure?â
âIâm sure. Come on up.â
âOkay.â She resumed climbing, and at the top, Jace took her hand and helped her step off the ladder and into the loft. She looked around with interest. Sheâd expected it to be cluttered with a lot of junk, but it wasnât. There were several boxes, but they were stacked neatly against the wall and labeled with their contents.
Just behind Jace was a large picture window with no glass. âThat must be where Katie and Ryan watched the fireworks all those years ago.â She moved to the window and peered outside. âToo bad theyâre over. This is a great place to watch them.â
Jace moved to stand behind her. He wasnât touching her, but the heat of his body was impossible to ignore. âItâs a nice night,â he said.
Gazing at the stars, Maya had to agree. She never thought sheâd have fun at a Fourth of July party in the middle of nowhere, but surprisingly, tonight had been one of the most enjoyable evenings sheâd ever had.
âIâm beginning to like it here,â she said with a smile. âIâm even starting to like country music.â
âIt does kind of grow on you, doesnât it?â
âAre you talking about Two Forks or country music?â
âTwo Forks,â Jace said. âIâll never get used to country music.â
Maya chuckled. âI guess itâs an acquired taste.â
âTwo Forks got a lot better when you showed up.â He slid his palms along her upper arms. His light touch jumpstarted her pulse. âThere were days when I thought I was going out of my mind.â
âI can imagine,â Maya said, remembering her first impression of the town.
âBut now Iâm going out of my mind for a completely different reason.â The husky timbre of his voice was a seductive whisper. Sexual tension thickened the blood in her veins.
âWhy is that?â
âBecause I want you so damn much.â He trailed his fingertips up to her shoulder and brushed her hair away from her neck. At the first touch of his lips on her skin, her breath hitched, and her pulse accelerated. She tilted her head to give him better access. His mouth was warm, and his kisses were teasing. And yes, they had the same effect as his demanding kiss earlier. The blood in her body was so hot; it was as if she was melting with desire.
Seconds later, Jace lifted his head and turned her around to face him. Lifting her gaze to his, she was transfixed by the desire burning in his eyes. Her heart pounded, and heat pooled between her legs. She was wet and ready for him and had been ever since heâd kissed her by the creek.
Lifting his hand, he cupped her nape. âTell me you want me too.
